Today’s Online Journalism And Online Creative Writing. By James C. Tanner With all the recent changes being made to internet search engines, online journalism and online creative writing are being forced to undergo a metamorphosis of sorts. In years past, the primary focus in the world of online writing was to target and list for the search engines primary meta keyword tags around which your article would be built. Today, only the smaller less significant search engines rely on listings of meta keyword tags. The big search engines now spider and crawl pages, absorbing the entire content providing real time search results. So how has this change impacted online journalism or the online creative writing process? Now when people write content for the internet a new focus has to be placed on creating a structure which search engine spiders can read–no longer placing your sole focus on just your primary human readers. Online Journalism and Online Creative Writing vs. On Page Search Engine Optimization For those actively involved in online journalism or online creative writing, it’s important to understand that keywords still play an important role in your content. In the past, keywords would be provided in a meta [...]
Today’s Online Journalism And Online Creative Writing is a post from: James C.
One doesn’t have to go far to find aids as well as writing tips for the up and coming writer. There are many great publications, both on and off line on the matter, but something is changing in the writing world. There is a rising need to lay out, or remind some people of vital key writing tips. In recent months, especially since the 2008 recession, the world of writing has creeped idly into a small writing dark age. On the heels of the 2008 recession, thousands of writers and editors lost jobs, causing many to think the era of writing was dead and gone. The internet has gone through a huge phase of auto-blogging where a simple website could be set up and them programmed to automatically download articles every few scheduled hours from “article farms”. The demand for articles plummeted after 2008, as a person could go online and purchase the private label rights to 15 – 25 professionally written articles for as little as $4.54. Then came the adorable Panda. Writing Tips Must Now Include A Love For The Panda “Panda” is the name assigned to a change Google made in their search engine algorithm. An algorithm [...]
Writing Tips That Turn The Tide is a post from: James C.
By James C. Tanner. Writing An Autobiography. When the dinner conversation turns to the question, “What do you do?” and people eventually learn that I spend a chunk of my time behind a keyboard, it’s amazing how many people have the ability to immediately produce autobiographies which were written by past family members. More often than not, autobiographies will hold information which appeals only to a small group of people who may be related, or come from a particular geographical area sharing a common location with the author. In today’s society, autobiographies are written more times than one realizes. The internet world is full of membership sites where people are expected to write profiles about themselves. Those profiles are small autobiographies, containing excerpts from a person’s background. Universities and professional organizations will often call on a person to write a paper outlining their past and previous achievements–another form of autobiography. How To Write An Autobiography One of the great challenges which arises from those who write an autobiography is an inability to view the manuscript from a stranger’s eyes. While an autobiography is your story, it’s a story which must be written in a way to appeal to readers. An [...]
Writing An Autobiography is a post from: James C. Tanner

By James C. Tanner. Is PDF The Best Format To E-Publish Your Book? In an exploding world of electronic readers and e-book publications, some authors are wondering as to which is the best format for publishing an electronic version of a book. When considering the format to be selected for an e-book or electronic book one must first consider: Does the PDF format enable me to present my book to the buyer in a consistent manner? Serious writers hold to the believe that a book manuscript is four products and not just one. A professionally written book is a regular print book, a large print book, an audio book, and an e-book. When considering the publishing format for an electronic book, a serious writer will want to step back and make certain that the finished product, in it’s complete presentation, remains consistent with the other versions of the book. When a person reads your e-book, will it make your printed book more easily recognizable on a store shelf, or will is appear as a completely different work? Much of this answer will be base on the graphics and art work used in both separate works, as the reader’s response is [...]
Is PDF The Best Format To E-Publish Your Book? is a post from: James C.
By James C. Tanner. When You Write A Book Write To A Changing Demographic. As touched upon in previous articles, many manuscripts from the point of conception to the point of publication can be measured in a time line based on years, and not months as many non-writers may think. It’s rare, but just the other day, a lady spoke of her book as being a 16 year work still in progress. When writing a book, a writer must take into careful consideration how society will change during the process of writing the book. Another way of expressing this would be to ask yourself, “What will society look like by the time I have published this book, and will that finished product be pertinent to that style of society?” It’s imperative that writers stay on top of the changing societal trends. Today a writer may begin to write a book targeting an audience of women who are in the age 45 to 60 age bracket. Many of the women who fall into this demographic will be baby boomers. What changes are happening to our world population, and how will that impact the future readers of this world. In 2010, globally [...]
When You Write A Book Write To A Changing Demographic is a post from: James C.
By James C. Tanner. Marketing Dynamics For Those Who Publish Or Self-Publish. In today’s world, marketing has become a very fast paced world for those who write a book, publish it through traditional means or self-publish. Selling more for less has become the cornerstone marker for every writer. Today, marketing is married to the internet. Historical reliance on the printed media is dying a very quick death as readers switch to electronic screens for their information. Through the years, homeowners would receive flyers along with their newspapers, but even the world of flyers has switched over to the world of online discount coupons. There are two unique opportunities existing today for up and coming writer’s to consider when it comes time to market their books. Marketing Through Video An increasing number of people who use online searches now turn to online videos. If you are a writer who is about to publish or self-publish a book, sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, etc. cannot be ignored. Crafting a video that’s less than 6 minutes can be easily achieved, and one of the simplest ways is to create a slide show with a soft musical background. Every book which exists today [...]
Marketing Dynamics For Those Who Publish Or Self-Publish is a post from: James C.
By James C. Tanner. Publish or Self-Publish: Promoting Your Book. It does not matter if you choose to self-publish your book or publish through traditional publishing houses, one thing for every author is critical today–how you choose to promote your book. Promoting your book today requires the initial acknowledgment that a book will not promote itself. In a world of ever changing terminology, today’s author must be more than just a writer, they must now become an “author-preneur”. In years past, one could rely heavily on promotional tools such as newspaper reviews, or newspaper ads. Times have changed, and today’s society does not read the newspaper, and as a result they are no longer influenced by book reviews published in that particular style of media. This reality has forced a writer to re-think his or her marketing strategies. Promoting your book is a process which takes time. Promoting a book doesn’t have to be expensive, but at some point in time, the process may or may not require some form of investment provided through a planned promotional budget. Promoting your book is all about creating “buzz” about your new work. Creating buzz is a process where by a person tries [...]
Publish or Self-Publish: Promoting Your Book is a post from: James C. For those readers who don’t know Marsha and her team at EMSI Public Relations (1127 Grove Street, Clearwater, Florida 33755 Ph. 727-443-7115), some time should be spent exploring the material they offer up through emails and website on how to put your best foot forward in the field of marketing through public relations. Marsha Friedman’s website can be found at http://emsincorporated.com/ This week’s email from Marsha touched on The Seven Deadly Sins Of Book Marketing or How NOT To Sell A Book, and while all of her points were excellent, I wanted to take two of those points and expand on them in this week’s submission to [...]
When You Publish Or Self-Publish: Avoid Marketing Blunders is a post from: James C.
